Biscuit book series by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

Traditional and sweet, just like homemade buttermilk biscuits with honey. Kirkus

Easy Fiction Treasure

Biscuit is an adorable Golden Retriever pup. There are heaps of books about Biscuit including titles from the "I can read" series, Board books, lift-the-flap, anthologies and phonic readers. Just like another wonderful pup I talked about recently - Spot - little Biscuit never grows older even though he first appeared in 1996.

Using a minimalist text the books in the Biscuit series are perfect for new readers and perfect to read aloud. They also invite participation with the repeated refrain -  "woof woof".

In the first book, Biscuit is not yet ready for bed. Every young child will recognise his stalling demands - a drink; a snack; a story; he needs his toy and his blanket but there is one more thing he needs - his friend!

In 2005 a new baby arrives in the family. Biscuit is desperate to meet the baby but the family seem to want him to wait. Puppies are not good at waiting. And they are not good with noise. When the baby cries out loudly little Biscuit is so shocked he runs away.  Finally after a long wait Biscuit does get to meet the baby - woof!

Here is a video of the author Alyssa Satin Capucilli talking about the inspiration for her first Biscuit story. Take a look at her web site.

The newest title in the series is Biscuit's snow day race (2019). In 2121 Biscuit and the little Llamas will be published. One more thing - you can now follow Biscuit on Facebook! The text for the Biscuit books is so well constructed but of course the illustrations are equally vital to the success of these famous books. Take a look at Pat Schories web pages they are filled with rich resources and examples of her art.

One way you could enjoy many of these books is through an anthology. I found a few different collections:

I need to read this one:

I also am keen to see other books by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and also the wordless books about Jack by Pat Schories.
