Shhh! Little Mouse by Pamela Allen

Will the little grey mouse find something to eat or will he wake the sleeping cat?

Tip-toe creeping. Shhh! little mouse.

It is delightful to watch the little mouse over a series of wordless pages nibble a pink iced biscuit, some watermelon, a huge pumpkin, a block of cheese, fresh bread, an apple core, a ripe red strawberry (this might make you and your young reading companion think of The Little Mouse, the Ripe red Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear); a piece of blueberry pie and then after all that nibbling he attempts to take a drink of water from a tall glass. Oh no! CRASH. The cat wakes up. Run, run, run.

One of my close friends will soon be a grandmother and so I am making a big collection of books to gift to the new mum and dad. Luckily, we have fabulous Lifeline Charity Bookfairs in my area a few times each year. This week I picked up over fifty picture books for AUS$68 and one was a mint condition copy of Shhh! Little Mouse which was a CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) short listed book in 2008. This book a classic it is still available (thank goodness) to buy. It is a perfect book to share with the youngest children.

Here is a list of books by Pamela Allen.  Most of these are sure to be in your local or school library. I used to love read the Mr McGee series to the Kindergarten children in my school library; Who sank the Boat is a classic to share with every young child as is Mr Archimedes Bath; The Potato people is very special; and with an older group, Herbert and Harry is sure to generate a lot of deep discussion.
