International illustrators

Inside For Every Child (2000) you will find illustrations by John Burningham; Babette Cole; Satoshi Kitamura; Shirley Hughes; PJ Lynch; Rachel Isadora; Jerry Pinkney and Claudio Munoz and lots of others.  Big names in the world of children's book illustration.

In Migrations (2019) there are contributions by names that may be less familiar: Isol from Buenos Aires; Marie-Louise Gay from Canada; Piet Grobler from South Africa; Mies van Hout from Netherlands; Roger Mello from Brasil; Jackie Morris from Wales; and Yuval Zommer from UK and lots of others.

I have been away from my blog for a couple of days as I am preparing a short video talk for IBBY Australia focusing on International illustrators. so focus of this post will be on some of my discoveries - some wonderful international illustrators. In future posts I will go into more detail about some of these amazing book creators.

Have you ever thought about the importance of illustrations in a picture book?

What happens if we only expose children to illustrators from one country for example showing children only picture books from Australia? We are so lucky here in Australia to have books from other English speaking countries - UK, USA, Canada and New Zealand but there are so many other picture books produced around the world.

What will children see if we show them picture books from different places - Japan, Korea, Iran, Estonia, France, Sweden, Argentina?

Some children, even here in Australia which is a wealthy country, will never visit an art gallery. Have you ever considered the art in picture books may be the only art some children ever see? Surely if this is the case we need to offer children the very best from here and from around the world.

I hope these images I have shared below will go some of the way to showing the depth and breadth of rich illustrations we can share with the children in our libraries and in our families.
