Storm Dragon by Dianne Hofmeyr illustrated by Carol Thompson

Do you love to read We're Going on a Bear Hunt?  I think I might have read that book aloud to groups of children over one hundred times.  Now I have a new book which I think will also fuel the imagination of younger children.

It is a wild, rainy and stormy day. It is not a day to stay inside - Let's hunt for storm dragons!

Trip! Trap! Stomp! Stamp!

Harumph! Galumph! Jumpy! Jump!

Clatter, splatter, skitter , skatter

If you work with preschool children this book is one you should add to you collection of books to read aloud. I love the way the boy and his grandfather celebrate using their imaginations, I love their relationship. This book has no agenda it is just a celebration of shared fun. The illustrations are also perfect and add beautifully to the atmosphere and energy of the story.

With Carol Thompson’s splendidly spirited illustrations accentuating the intergenerational relationship and the power of imaginative play, and a smashing read aloud text, this is a MUST to share with foundation stage listeners. They will delight in joining in, first with the wonderfully alliterative sounds and then, on a second or third reading acting out the trip-trapping, stomp stamping, harrumphing and galumphing, jumping, tramping, climbing into the boat, raising the spyglass and then finally clatter and splatter, running all the way back, pushing open the door and hiding from …  Red Reading Hub

You can see Dianne reading her book.  Here are some other books by Dianne Hofmeyr:

I do like the look of these board books written and illustrated by Carol Thompson - They would make perfect gifts for a new baby:
