USBBY Outstanding International Books list 2023

The United States Board of Books for Young People’s (USBBY) mission is to “[build] bridges of international understanding through children’s and young adult books”. The annual Outstanding International Books List recommends approximately 40 titles for readers, preschool through high school. Selected by a committee of people who love and study children’s and young adult literature, these books represent the outstanding bridges authors, illustrators, and translators from around the world create each year.

You are sure to have guessed our Australia titles on this list are the ones you can see at the top of this post. In the US two of these have different covers:

You can see the full selection using a link from this School Library Journal article.

I have talked previously about:

Selection criteria include:

  • Books that represent the best of children’s literature from other countries
  • Books that introduce readers in the United States to outstanding authors and illustrators from other countries
  • Books that help children in the United States see the world from other points of view
  • Books that provide a perspective or address a topic otherwise missing from children’s literature in the United States
  • Books that exhibit a distinct cultural flavour
  • Books that are accessible to readers in the United States

Take a look at my post about the 2022 Outstanding International Books as selected by USBBY.
