IBBY Hans Christian Andersen recommended book list

The Hans Christian Andersen Jury, in wanting to help build bridges of understanding, has created a list of twenty outstanding books from the 2024 nominees that they felt were important enough to merit translation everywhere so that children around the world could read them, thus expanding their access to some of the very best books. I talked about the HCAA Short list earlier this week.

She is scared and hugs her blue teddy bear, the one that has accompanied her everywhere since she was a little girl. It's called KISSOU. Thus begins the long journey. Helsinki, Finland: Förlaget, 2020, ISBN 978-952-333-296-6

Blurb: An axolotl is a small, smiling amphibian that lives its entire life at the larval stage, which means that it never really grows up. Here we meet a lone axolotl, it is possible that he is the last wild on the planet. He is very happy in his puddle where he hangs out with tiger salamanders, collects treasures and spies on all the fun the two-legged luns on the beach are up to. But it's getting steadily warmer, the puddle is getting murkier, ugly fish are moving in. One day, there is a big wave that sweeps everything away. A happy, ecological and existential book about life on earth the fragile, but at the same time robust.

This one intrigues me - bookseller blurb: "Can our hoodie hero make it through nine circles of Hell and back again? Will he find love with his soulmate, Beatrice? Discover the city of Dis where everybody disses everybody. Meet Frankenstein, the lovesick bouncer with the bling-bling. Come face to face with the Furies, a gang of snake-haired females in T-shirts. Prepare for a host of gluttons, bigots and plunderers from the world of history and politics. John Agard fires Dante's Inferno into the 21st century in a red-hot retelling, with wicked artwork from Satoshi Kitamura."
