Blue Daisy by Helen Frost

Sam and Katie see a scruffy and dirty stray dog in their neighbourhood. How can they make friends with her? Especially after something they do is so very, very wrong. This could be a simple story but it contains a powerful moral dilemma which is sure to make your young reading companion gasp.

Blue Daisy is partly a verse novel and partly told through prose with the alternating voices of best friends Sam and Katie. This is a perfect short book for young readers aged 7+ especially if they love dogs!

You might want to bake some snickerdoodles after read this book and luckily Helen Frost gives her readers a recipe in the back of the book.

Blue Daisy has been on my book wish list for a couple of years. I previously read a Young Adult verse novel Crossing Stones by Helen Frost and so I was keen to try her junior title. I also enjoyed Applesauce Weather.

Publisher blurb: A dirty, skinny, dog shows up in Sam and Katie’s neighborhood. They start to follow it, and they don’t like what they see: The Wilson sisters yell at it because it goes in their garden and the Tracy twins chase it on their bikes and throw things at it. Sam and Katie want the dog to know they’ll be its friends. They think it should have a name. Most of all, they want it to like them. But then they do something thoughtless, and after that, it’s hard to make things right, especially because the dog now won’t come near them. How they earn the dog’s trust, help it find its place in their town and how it gets its name, makes for a heartwarming story told in two voices using prose and poetry.

Here is an interview with Helen Frost about her book. Here are a set of things to think about and things to do after reading this book designed by Helen herself.
