Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller illustrated by Jen Hill

Publisher blurb: "When a young girl named Tanisha spills grape juice all over her new dress, her classmate wants to make her feel better and remembers that Mom always says, 'Be kind.' But what does it mean to be kind? As the child ponders everything from asking a new girl to play to standing up for someone being bullied, this moving and thoughtful story explorers what kindness is, and how any act, big or small, can make a different or at least help a friend."

You can see a video of the whole book here. This is a book you could use with a younger class after a discussion about ways to show kindness.

Pat Zietlow Miller is the author of Sophie's Squash. I was pleased to read some of Pat Zietlow Miller's favourite authors are: Kevin Henkes; Sharon Creech; Kate DiCamillo; Jacqueline Woodson; Dori Chaconas; Jill Esbaum; Julie Fogliano; Mem Fox (from Australia!) Mary Lyn Ray; and Judith Viorst.

Here are some other books from the many available on the topic of kindness:
