Picture Book Month Day 11

Day eleven of this series is a Thursday so it is the perfect day to share this gentle Australian picture book - Where does Thursday Go? I am so sad to report this book is now out of print. Where does Thursday go? was first published in 2001 and it was a CBCA Honour Book in 2002 in the Early Childhood category. I do wish the publisher - Scholastic Australia - had made a twenty year anniversary edition. A new generation of children need to hear this book.

At a conference a few years ago one of the speakers - Mark McLeod - talked about the importance of sharing quiet stories with children. He was especially talking about Australian children's books so in response to this idea I started a Pinterest collection of Quiet stories. The good news, though, is that this book is certain to be found in most Primary school libraries AND if you speak other languages or live in another part of the world, Where Does Thursday Go? has been published in Brazil, China, Korea, and Spain, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Holland, UK and USA. Stephen Michael King says: This book contains some of my all-time-favourite art.

Janeen Brian has penned such a lyrical text which is a joy to read aloud especially after a busy day when you need a gentle book that reads a little like a lullaby.

"They crept downstairs and slipped out into the star-speckled streets."

As the owl "flapped past, its wings whispered in the cool night air."
