I am really drawn to books about the power of words and also to books which explore big emotions. In my role with IBBY Australia I also enjoy exploring books translated into English. Phileas's fortune: a story about self-expression, meets all of of these criteria.
I found this list of Picture Book criteria from the National Library of New Zealand:
The best picture books provide an appealing mix of engaging story, strong characters, rich language, and visual wonder.
- illustrations that are engaging, varied, and colourful, while adding to the storyline
- strong characters that are identifiable and evoke emotion
- a story that teaches a concept or value
- an interesting plot that captures the attention of the reader
- rich vocabulary
- re-readability
Take a look at this 15 minute video which explores the importance of book selection for and with your child.
